Vocational Education in Scotland

Agenda
View programme

Vocational education is one of the most vibrant and innovative elements of the Scottish educational landscape; retraining the unemployed, creating opportunities for the socially excluded, equipping apprentices and providing the skills for people of all ages to compete in the labour market. At the heart of this industry are Scotland’s colleges, complimented by the work of private sector providers.

Our conference is an opportunity to envision vocational education in 2015, informed by examples of success and best practice from the present.

In the next decade, the right leadership will be essential in ensuring skills are properly utilised in business and the economy. Our speakers and their presentations will be thought provoking and reflect the changes we will face. And we will learn from the Irish perspective; how they adapted to the massive and sudden changes in their economy and society.

There is no doubt that the skills of our people will play a vital role in economic recovery and sustainability. Vocational education will not be immune from the economic challenge posed by the reduction of the public sector deficit. This is despite extra funding allocated by the Scottish Government that allows colleges to offer additional places.
